Sulphur is one of the major nutrient essential for plant growth, root nodule formation of legumes and plant protection mechanisms. It plays a role in the formation of chlorophyll and hence imparts deep rich green colour to plant canopy. It is required for the synthesis of a number of Amino Acids which are essential components of protein.
Natural Sulphur in soil is mainly bound in soil organic matter that is not directly available to plants and micro organisms are responsible for the recycling of Sulphur. Hence whatever Sulphur we put into the crop as a nutrient supplement, a very small part of that can be taken up by the plant as it can not be absorbed directly by the plant. |
